"When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it", this phase cought my attention when I was recently reading The Alchemist by Paulo Cohelo, I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of his literature but this book is very spiritually enriching. This year has brought nice surprises that have directed my career path towards what I love to do: working in the nature, looking for our beautiful feathered friends. After being announced as the Big Year 2017 winner, I have been contacted by many people expressing love and support for my projects and I'm really thankful. Also, I have received some very nice opportunities that I would like to share with you all.

"Cuando realmente quieres algo el universo confabula para que lo alcances", ésta frase me llamó la atención hace unos días que estaba leyendo "El Alquimista" de Paulo Cohelo, debo admitir que no soy fan de su literatura pero éste libro en particular es enriquecedor espiritualmente. Éste año me ha traído buenas sorpresas que apuestan por dirigir mi carrera hacia lo que amo hacer: trabajar en la naturaleza, buscando a nuestros bellos amigos emplumados. Luego de ser anunciada como la ganadora del "Big Year 2017", he sido contactada por muchas personas expresándome su apoyo por mis proyectos y estoy realmente agradecida por todas las muestras de amor. Sumado a esto se me han abierto las puertas de muy buenas oportunidades las cuales me gustaría compartirlas con todos ustedes.

Meeting my 700th  species was a bonus to all the great things that have been happening to me this year. On one of my tours to the Irazu Volcano National Park, we made a stop to look for the Resplandent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), and there I had the honor of meeting the Costa Rican and western Panamanian endemic: Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium costaricanum) a rufous morph. This species was one of the 13 species that I counted as "only head" during my Big Year and I'm really glad that I finally saw it.

El haber conocido mi especie de ave número 700, fue un bono a todas las cosas buenas que me han ocurrido éste año. En uno de mis tours al Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú, hicimos una parada para buscar Quetzales (Pharomachrus mocinno) y ahí tuve el honor de conocer al endémico de Costa Rica y el oeste de Panamá: el Mochuelo Montañero, un búho muy pequeñito, morfo rojizo. Ésta es una de las 13 especies que conté como "escuchadas" durante mi Big Year, por lo que ahora me siento honrada de ver finalmente.

First of all, the prize for winning the competition is three stays in three different birding hotspot lodges in Costa Rica, from wich I can choose and I have decided to visit Cristal Ballena near Marino Ballena National Park and Macaw Lodge on the Central Pacific, I'm still thinking about in which lodge will be my 3rd stay. I chose those destinations because of the new bird species I can add to my list and also because they are areas that I haven't birded much. In addition, Costa Rica Birding Hotspots, organizator of the competition, is going to give me an award at the II National Encounter of Bird-tourism, Costa Rica in May.

Primero que todo, el premio por haber ganado la competencia consiste en tres estadías en tres hoteles pajareros de Costa Rica, de los cuales puedo escoger y he decido visitar Cristal Ballena, cerca del Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, Macaw Lodge en el Pacífico Central y aun sigo pensando en cuál hotel será mi tercer estadía. Escogí éstos destinos por las nuevas especies de aves que puedo ver y por que son áreas en las que no he pajareado mucho. Adicionalmente, Costa Rica Birding Hotspots, organizador de la competencia, me entregará un reconocimiento, en el II Encuentro Nacional de Aviturismo (trofeo de la competencia).

Secondly, I was contacted by the Outdoors Tienda de Aventura, who are representatives of Celestron in Costa Rica, they wanted to reward me because of my effort and they came in to Rancho Naturalista to deliver me a cute Hummingbird Scope from Celestron, a really handy and tiny scope that fits into my luggage perfectly for my birding trips, and its magnification allows a good range of view. Joined with that, they invited me to be part of the month of the woman, where they want to congratulate (by giving Columbia products) and mention several Costa Rican women who stand out in the outdoors fields, so I will be joining them on the store for the activity.

Segundamente, fui contactada por Outdoors Tienda de Aventura, quienes son los representantes de Celestron en Costa Rica, ellos querían premiar mi esfuerzo y vinieron a Rancho Naturalista a dejarme un telescopio para observación de aves Celestron Hummingbird super bonito, el cual es muy practico: al ser pequeño lo puedo llevar en mi maleta para mis viajes pajareros, y su magnificación permite un gran alcance. Sumado a ésto, me invitaron a ser parte del mes de la mujer, donde quieren felicitar, con regalías marca Columbia, a varias mujeres que se han destacado en el campo de Outdoors (actividades al aire libre), por lo que los estaré acompañando durante la actividad en a tienda.

Thirdly, I was invited by Chris Wood to participate in the Macaulay Library's 2018 Sound Recording Workshop at the University of Cornell where I will be sponsored to cover the cost  of the workshop, acommodations and alimentation. This will take place in Ithaca, New York at the Ornithology Lab, the objective is to teach us the best techniques for capturing bird sounds and creating "audio specimens" to archive them in a virtual library. Now that I have my USA Visa approved, I'm studing my Sibley's North American Bird Guide book!

Terceramente, fui invitada por Chris Wood para participar en el Taller de Grabación de Sonidos de la Biblioteca de Macaulay 2018, en la Universidad de Cornell donde seré patrocinada con el costo del taller, estadía y alimentación. Será llevado a cabo en Ithaca, New York en el Laboratorio de Ornitología, el objetivo es educar con las mejores técnicas para capturar los sonidos de las aves y crear audio-especímenes para archivarlos en una biblioteca virtual. Ahora que ya tengo mi Visa aprobada, me encuentro estudiando mi Guía de Aves de Norteamerica, por David Sibley's.

I met Chris Wood during my "Big Year 2017" in the IV Caño Negro Birdcount, where we birded together with Patrick O'Donell and got amazing birds like the Yellow-breasted Crake (Hapalocrex flaviventer) and Nicaraguan Seed-Finch (Sporophila nuttingi). Chris is one of the E-bird co-founders which is a virtual platform for bird list reports from the Cornell Ornthology Lab. Now that I have my USA Visa approved, I'm studing my Sibley's North American Bird Guide book!

Tuve la oportunidad de conocer a Chris Wood en el IV Conteo de Aves de Caño Negro, donde pajareamos junto a Patrick O'Donell y tuvimos la dicha de ver especies muy buenas como la Polluela Pechiamarilla (Hapalocrex flaviventer) y el Semillero Picorosado (Sporophila nuttingi). Chris, es uno de los co-fundadores de la plataforma virtual E-Bird, muy usada en Costa Rica para el registro de listas de especies de aves, la cual pertenece al Laboratorio de Ornitología de Cornell.

I'm also very exited because my boss Lisa, has invited me to go with her to the British Birdfair 2018, wich will take place at Oakham, England. We are going to promote Rancho Naturalista and Costa Rica as a birding hotspot at the biggest bird convention in the world, a great place to meet people from all around who dedicate their lifes to birding and bird conservation.

También estoy muy emocionada ya que mi jefa Lisa, me ha invitado a ir con ella a la Feria de Aves Británica 2018, la cual se llevará a cabo en Oakham, Inglaterra. El propósito es promover Rancho Naturalista y Costa Rica como un destino ideal para el aviturismo en la convención de pajareros más importante del mundo, un lugar genial para conocer personas de diversos lugares del mundo que también dedican su vida a la observación de aves y a su conservación.

A year ago, my boss Lisa Erb had an incredible idea: to sign me in to the contest "Big Year Costa Rica" trying to see as many bird species as possible in the country during 2017. She said "This is going to improve your birdlife knowleadge and will allow you to meet lots of birders, in a male dominated activity,  there's no women participating and it would be great to have a femenine representation" that's how I got conviced to do it!

Hace un año mi jefa Lisa Erb, tuvo una excelente idea: inscribirme en el concurso “Big Year Costa Rica” para tratar de ver la mayor cantidad de especies de aves en el país durante el 2017. Me dijo: “Esto le va a ayudar a aprender mucho sobre las aves y conocer muchos pajareros (as), en una actividad mayormente predominada por hombres, no hay mujeres en el concurso y sería muy bueno representación femenina” y así me convenció de participar.

I set a goal of 700 species (Costa Rica has 920 approx.), during a year I traveled to different areas of the country that I never imagined I would visit, I made very good friends on the way and met others that proved to be less so, but this experience proved enriching. I participated in 6 Birdcounts and one pelagic trip on the Pacific Ocean. It was a year full of good moments and others that made me want to give up, however it also was the year where I have had the most beautiful experiences birding, lots of lifers and most of the times accopanied by valuable friends that has won a place in my heart, at the end I closed the year surpassing my goal, very satisfied by reaching 707 species.

Me fijé una meta de 700 especies (hay 920 aprox. en el país), pasé un año trasladándome por diferentes lugares del país que no me imaginaba visitar, conocí buenos amigos y otros no tan buenos que de igual forma me enriquecieron, asistí a 6 conteos de aves y a un tour pelágico por el Océano Pacífico. Fue un año lleno de altibajos en el que estuve a punto de renunciar a la mitad, pero también fue en el que he tenido las experiencias más maravillosas pajareando, muchas aves que nunca había visto y  muchas veces en compañía de amigos valiosos que se han ganado un lugar en mi corazón, al final cerré el año sobrepasando mi meta muy satisfecha al registrar 707 especies.

It´s a pleasure for me to announce to you that on January 2nd I got the news that I had won "Big Year Costa Rica 2017" Even though I wasn't the person who reported the highest number of birds (I was 5th in e-bird) I reported the most species of those who participated in the competition. I want to congratulate Ariel Fonseca, who was on of the two winners of "Big Year Costa Rica 2016", because of his impresive effort by registering 747 species in 2017, topping the list totals of all e-birders in Cost Rica.

Es un gusto comunicarles que el pasado 2 de Enero me informaron que había ganado la competencia “Big Year Costa Rica 2017”, a pesar de no ser quien vió más aves en CR (fui 5to lugar en e-bird), fui la persona inscrita que obtuvo más especies. Quisiera a la vez felicitar a Ariel Fonseca, uno de los ganadores de “Big Year Costa Rica 2016”, por su impresionante esfuerzo al registrar 747 especies en el 2017, liderando los “Top e-birders” en Cost Rica.

I wish to offer thanks to all my family for their support, but special thanks to both of my parents that guided me, to grandma for taking sweet care of me as a second mom and my sisters who helped me in so many ways, giving me a home, love and the opportunity to find lots of new birds.

Por éste medio, quisiera agradecer a mi familia en general por el apoyo, pero en especial a mis padres que me guiaron, a mi abuelita por cuidarme con tanto cariño como una segunda madre y a mis hermanas quienes me ayudaron de tantas maneras, dándome hogar, amor y por ende la oportunidad de ver muchas aves nuevas.

Thanks to all my good friends who birded with me during this year, for helping me, teaching me and joining me I thank the divine universal energy that crossed them on my way and I wish the best for them and their projects. To Beto Guido for  his amazingly possitive vib along several trips, for sharing his knowladge about shore birds and inspired so many people along his way as a birder, and also for introducing me to new friends such as Mario Fernández who, during his free time took me to find the species that I had missed at Montevere and found me my most wanted one: the Gray-throated Leaftosser

Agradezco a todos los buenos amigos que pajarearon éste año conmigo, por su ayuda, aprendizaje y compañía le agradezco a la divina energía universal por ponerlos en mi camino y les deseo todo lo mejor a ellos y a sus proyectos. A Beto Guido por toda la buena vibra en varias pajareadas, por compartir su conocimiento sobre aves playeras e inspirar a tantas personas a pajarear durante su trayecto como pajarero, además por presentarme nuevos amigos como Mario Fernández quién invirtió su tiempo libre para llevarme a ver las especies que me faltaban de Monteverde y encontrarme el que más quería ver: el Tirahojas Gargantigrís.

To Patrick O'Donell and the Birding Club of Costa Rica for making me part of the group at Cuidad Neilly and at the birdcounts at Caño Negro and Santa Rosa, in those tours I got a lot of new species, most of them because of Patrick's talent, including the bird species 8th in my Top 10: Yellow-breasted Crake.

To Marco Umaña for calling me "Llamarona" (in english "big flame" refering that we are very enthusiastic birders) after so many birding days and lots of lifers, and for taking me to Alvaro Gutierres to whom I thank for locating my nemesis species, the Striped Cuckoo, and also for intruducing me to Roberto Vargas who brightened my mood  and helped me to find the Black-bellied Wren.

To Johan Fernández for including me into his "VIP" team at the Central Pacific Birdcount and finding my bird #700: Snowy Plover, which is a rarity in Costa Rica. To Diego Quesada, who was the other winner of "Big Year Costa Rica 2016", for his support, good advice and for finding  by the song the Rufous-browed Tyrannulet. To Andy Walker who coincided in his woldwide Big Year 2017 with my Costa Rican adventure, in a trip to the Southern Cairbbean where I added 19 bird species to my list. To Jose Pablo for adding 5 species more to my list, three of them lifers, very near to the capital city!.

A Johan Fernández por incluirme en su equipo "VIP" para el Conteo Pacífico Central y encontrar mi ave #700: Snowy Plover la cual es una rareza en Costa Rica. A Diego Quesada por su apoyo, consejos y por encontrar por su canto el Mosquerito Cejirufo.  Andy Walker con quien coincidí en su “Big Year Mundial 2017” en un viaje al Caribe sur, donde sumé 19 especies a mi lista. A Jose Pablo por en una mañana sumar 5 especies más a mi lista, 3 de ellos lifers e irónicamente cerquísima de chepe!

To Danny, a birder from my hometown Turrialba for his enthusiasm and for the day we got "Jacanized" watching the Wattled Jacana.

A Jairo por enseñarme Las Brisas y mi némesis el Bronzy Hermit en el conteo de Reinita Cerulea, al cual asistí gracias a Ulises Zúñiga, quien se apuntó en la loquera y me llevó a pajarear varias veces  y decidido a aprender, fuimos a Coris a buscar al Halcón Aplomado desde afuera, ésta ave ocupa el 5to puesto en mi Top 10. A Danny Alvarado, pajarero turrialbeño por su entusiasmo y por el día en que quedamos “Jacanizados” con la Wattled Jacana.

I want to give special thanks to my fellows at Rancho Naturalista, to Lisa Erb who got this amazing idea and gave me the chance to be out of Rancho whenever a new rarity was reported in e-bird. But also to an excellent birdguide, coleague and mentor Harry Barnard, for sharing (yesterday and today) his vast knowleadge with me since I began birding as a guide, with him I got to observe more than half of the birds I reported during the year. He was always interested in my bird trips, list of possible bird species by locations, my new ones, being supportive, offering advice and guiding me when I had doubts about identifications, even though sometimes it was by e-mail and from Brazil, Paraguay or England!

Le agradezco a mis amigos del Rancho Naturalista, a Lisa Erb quien tuvo ésta excelente idea y por darme permiso para estar fuera de Rancho cuando había algún reporte especial en e-bird. Pero en especial quiero agradecer a un excelente guía de aves, colega y mentor Harry Barnard, por compartir ayer y hoy su vasto conocimiento conmigo desde mis inicios y forjarme como guía pajarera, con él observé más de la mitad de las aves que reporté. Siempre pendiente de mis viajes, lista de posibles especies, mis nuevos registros, apoyándome, aconsejándome y guiándome cuando tenía dudas sobre identificación de especies, aunque fuera por correo electrónico y ¡desde Brazil, Paraguay o Inglaterra!

There's many other birder friends that supported me in different ways and I thank them all for their beautiful positive energy. Last, I want to share with you my Top 10 list of the species I enjoy the most, I picked them carefully because of different reasons that I will explain in my next article.

Hay muchos mas amigos que me apoyaron de diversas maneras y les agradezco a todos por su hermosa energía positiva. Por último quisiera compartir el Top 10 de las especies que más disfrute en éste año, las cuales escogí cuidadosamente por diversas razones que expondré en mi próximo artículo.
